The Viking Association is proud to be a major part, in cooperation with the school, in these significant projects:
Scholarships
The Viking Association funds two $1000 scholarships for worthy graduating seniors. One is named for Sen. Mark O. Hatfield (1922-2011), class of 1940. It is awarded to a student with outstanding qualities in scholarship, leadership, character, and service; qualities Mark Hatfield exemplified. The other is granted in the name of Rep. Edith Starrett Green (1910-1987), class of 1927. While in Congress, Rep. Green sponsored Title IX, granting equal opportunity for women in education, most notably in sports. This award goes to an outstanding female scholar-athlete.
Hall of Fame
Started in 2006 in conjunction with North High’s Centennial celebration, the Viking Hall of Fame is one of a handful of Halls which honors categories in addition to athletics (see the link on the homepage sidebar for the four categories, criteria, and nominating forms). Because our Hall of Fame is not supported by tax dollars, the Viking Association has taken over the sponsorship of the Hall. Photo plaques of recipients are mounted on the walls of the main hall entry to the North High building.
School Grants
During the 2015-16 school year, the Viking Association contributed $10,000 to the Aspire Program, an effort to mentor students toward their career and educational goals. In addition, $20,000 was spent to purchase new textbooks for the junior English classes that are in line with the Common core standards.
Fitness Center
The Viking Association has taken the lead on a project to convert the weight room into a fitness center. The current facility is over 25 years old with the original flooring and equipment which is either out of date, in disrepair, or unsafe. An effort to raise $150,000 for the renovation is underway. The Viking Association has contributed over $35,000 for the purchase of new equipment, in addition $11,000 will be given to replace the floor in the Fitness Center. The drinking fountain will also be replaced. This work will take place over winter break.
Service Project
During Homecoming Week in the fall of 2015, a group of alumni reconstructed the benches surrounding the flagpole in front of the building. This was a “hands on” project. Former woods instructor Dave Anderson took the lead on it. Our hope is that such a service project will become an annual event.
